March Madness 2019 - Round of 8 Results

Good games! Don't take my word for it, take the CBS Sports' Twitter account's word for it!

I mean, I watched Jamal Mashburn face off with Christian Laettner back in 1992, and I would love to rewatch that game now to see if it was as good as the Virginia/Purdue game. Jake's boy Carsen Edwards hit ten goddamn threes and scored 40.
And sure, Laettner's shot is historic, but it was drawn up after a timeout. This crazy fucking thing was so fucking crazy I, alone in my basement, shrieked when the ball went in.
This little exchange going into overtime was also pure sex:

So yeah, that game was good, and the others were also good! Bruce Pearl, can you believe that no one drafted any Auburn players?

Me neither!

TOP SEVEN STUDS - ELITE EIGHT
OWNER ROUND SELECTION PLAYER TEAM SEED GAME4_SCORE
1 Gavin 1 1 Zion Williamson Duke Blue Devils 1 41
2 Stu 1 8 PJ Washington Kentucky Wildcats 2 40
3 Jake 3 30 Carsen Edwards Purdue Boilermakers 3 40
4 Bob 2 18 Ty Jerome Virginia Cavaliers 1 35
5 Jake 1 10 Cassius Winston Michigan State Spartans 2 34
6 Dan 3 26 Kyle Guy Virginia Cavaliers 1 34
7 Alison 5 47 Xavier Tillman Michigan State Spartans 2 33

Edwards scored 42 and had 2 rebounds, but his 4 turnovers put him at 40, just under Zion and alongside Stu's PJ Washington, who finally balled out just in time to be eliminated. Jake got a big performance from his MSU guard Winston, Alison's MSU guy was also good, and my UVA Guy got hot. Not listed are any Texas Tech players, but Culver was just outside the top 7 and they live to see another day.

TOP SEVEN DUDS - ELITE EIGHT
OWNER ROUND SELECTION PLAYER TEAM SEED GAME4_SCORE
1 Bob 8 78 Braxton Key Virginia Cavaliers 1 1
2 Bob 3 23 Nick Ward Michigan State Spartans 2 11
3 Luke 5 44 Ryan Cline Purdue Boilermakers 3 11
4 Shawn 2 12 Tre Jones Duke Blue Devils 1 13
5 Luke 2 17 Cam Reddish Duke Blue Devils 1 13
6 Shawn 4 32 Tyler Herro Kentucky Wildcats 2 16
7 Luke 6 57 Reid Travis Kentucky Wildcats 2 16

I still do not know who Braxton Key is, and I assume Bob did not know much about Virginia's rotations before he drafted him. They played Jack Salt a lot against Purdue, but I'm pretty sure he would have also been a terrible draft pick. Cam Reddish played for Luke Duke, but who cares, they're both done. PRETENDER STATUS: CONFIRMED!

Let's get to the leaderboard!

2 games left, folks. Jake and Alison both have Michigan State players, so Alison can't make up any ground. Jake's guy could break both legs tonight and Keldon Johnson still couldn't total 72 points in two games.

So that leaves Stu, who has Mooney, Owens, and Culver from Tech. If MSU loses and Winston has a bad night, Jake plateaus around 715. To get to that number, Stu needs 142 points with 3 players in 2 games. 142/6 = 24. All these Red Raiders need to score 24 points per game.

Mamma Mia, Jake is a-gonna win!

March Madness Fantasy 2019 - Round of 16 Results

Auburn beats a "flu"-ridden UNC team. Purdue beats Tennessee in overtime, after a questionable foul call gave Edwards three free throws in the waning seconds of regulation. Texas Tech suffocates Michigan's offense and advances. How do these mild upsets affect our precious fantasy league?

TOP SEVEN STUDS, ROUND OF 16
OWNER ROUND SELECTION PLAYER TEAM SEED GAME3_SCORE
1 Jake 5 50 Kerry Blackshear Jr. Virginia Tech Hokies 4 39
2 Shawn 2 12 Tre Jones Duke Blue Devils 1 35
3 Jake 3 30 Carsen Edwards Purdue Boilermakers 3 35
4 Luke 5 44 Ryan Cline Purdue Boilermakers 3 34
5 Shawn 1 9 Grant Williams Tennessee Volunteers 2 33
6 James 1 2 Brandon Clarke Gonzaga Bulldogs 1 32
7 Stu 2 13 Jarrett Culver Texas Tech Red Raiders 3 32

Jake was close to getting another of his players to advance, but VT lost to Duke because Tre Jones finally showed up, hitting 5 or 6 threes, I am not going to look it up. An overtime game where both teams almost reached 100 accounts for the Purdue and Tennessee studs, including an unexpected performance from some white kid named Ryan Cline, who of course belongs to Luke. Luke also got one last big game from another white guard, as Pritchard played all 40 minutes for the Fighting Ducks. Brandon Clarke continues to prove a worthy #2 overall pick, and continues to be on James' doomed team.

TOP SEVEN DUDS, ROUND OF 16
OWNER ROUND SELECTION PLAYER TEAM SEED GAME3_SCORE
1 Alison 4 34 Zavier Simpson Michigan Wolverines 2 0
2 Bob 8 78 Braxton Key Virginia Cavaliers 1 0
3 Gavin 7 61 Nassir Little North Carolina Tar Heels 1 5
4 Dan 5 46 Jon Teske Michigan Wolverines 2 11
5 Bob 3 23 Nick Ward Michigan State Spartans 2 12
6 Gavin 8 80 Garrison Brooks North Carolina Tar Heels 1 12
7 Dan 3 26 Kyle Guy Virginia Cavaliers 1 13

Simpson went 0-fer against Tech, and Key played but didn't accumulate any stats against Oregon. Little apparently was in poor health, and of course this is always described as "the flu", but I would bet he and others on the team had norovirus because some were reported to have vomiting.
Cool. Meanwhile, Kyle Guy appears on the dud list again. This bitch set an ACC record for 3PT percentage this year (43%), and from the second half against Gardner-Webb to halftime against the Ducks, he had missed his last 16 3's.

Last-pick Jake is still in the lead! He gets another game out of Purdue's Edwards, who has now equaled Jake teammate Ja Morant with 117 fantasy points, both ranking just 2 points below Oregon/Luke's Pritchard for the highest scoring player thus far. Jake's other remaining player is Michigan State's Winston. If both lose in the Elite 8, Jake will gain another, let's say, 40 points, and his total will stop around 666 points. That's if both teams lose. If Purdue and MSU meet in the final, he'd get up around 740 points. So who can overtake him?

Alison has three remaining players, from Gonzaga, Michigan State, and Kentucky. All could reach the Final Four. Her players are averaging 15-20 points per game. So yeah, she could beat Jake. Shit, math. Uhhh, best case scenario is KY(20+20+20)+ZAGS(20+20+20)+MSU(20+20) for a total of 160 on top of her current 540 is 700. She's a contender.

Luke has Reid from Kentucky who seems like a real jerk, Cam Reddish, who didn't play in the last game due to some kind of injury, and Cline from Purdue, who's averages 17 per game when you remove his aberration against Tennessee. Well, all three could make the Final Four, but the Reddish injury is concerning. Perhaps Luke is a PRETENDER and not a CONTENDER? Luke, I am truly sorry for what I just typed. It was out of line.

Gav keeps chugging along with 30+ points per game from Zion, who by the fucking way, could tone it down a bit with his celebrations. Every goddamn hoop Duke scores is like a game winner for Zion, clapping and yelling and whatnot. Why? Because he's the best player in the tournament and loves to win and is passionate? Lame. Gav is down to one other man, Gonzaga's Norvell Jr, averaging about 20, as the only Zion teammate. Duke and Gonzaga can't both be in the championship. So Gav's max effort would be 30+30+30+20+20=130 added to his current 500 = 630.

With the same four players he still has, Stu went from 380 to 463.5 in one round. PJ Washington actually played for Kentucky! So if he keeps playing on his bad foot and Kentucky and Texas Tech keep winning and meet in the championship, he could get about 80 points per round times 3 rounds and gain about 240 points, totaling about 700 points. Stu could beat Jake or Alison!

Chris has one man left, Goins from MSU.

Dan has 2 UVA players and the Gonzaga PG left. They could meet in the final. If we're looking for a 700 total for a winning owner, I need 270 points from my guys. 270/(6 games from 3 players) = 45. Each of my guys only needs to score 45 points per game on their way to the title matchup. My God, I was the pretender all along. Again, Luke, I am so sorry!

Shawn and James, still bad.

Bob has 4 players left but two are from Virginia and we just saw how my math played out for a guy with two Cavaliers left. Not great, Bob!

Remember that? They were truly Mad Men. I guess. I watched some episodes here and there but couldn't get into it.

Here is the plot of every owned player:

March Madness Fantasy 2019 - Round of 32 Results

Well well well, Duke's season is on the line and these fuckwit refs swallow their whistles and let them bulldoze and push their way to a come-from-behind victory. Any of you who drafted Duke players are COMPLICT and I will NOT recognize a champion who got to the top of our standings by cheating Tacko and the boys out of a Sweet Sixteen.

What else happened during this dumb bullshit second round of bullshit dumb games?

TOP SEVEN STUDS, ROUND OF 32
OWNER ROUND SELECTION PLAYER TEAM SEED GAME2_SCORE
1 Jake 2 11 Ja Morant Murray State Racers 12 58

4 Gavin 1 1 Zion Williamson Duke Blue Devils 1 45
5 Jake 3 30 Carsen Edwards Purdue Boilermakers 3 45
6 Luke 4 37 Payton Pritchard Oregon Ducks 12 44
7 Stu 3 28 Dedric Lawson Kansas Jayhawks 4 36

Jake got two excellent games out of Ja, which is all a reasonable man could expect. First-rounders Clarke and Zion had big games, and one of them should be a goat for missing a game-tying free throw but instead everybody acts like he carried the team on his back to victory. Well, guess what asshole, the NCAA is profiting off your image and you can't do shit about it! And your university cheated to get federal research grants, bitch! Also bowing out was Chris' goofy-haired Minnesota guard, who shouldered all of the Gophers' scoring as my Minnesota forward had to sit out with back spasms.

TOP SEVEN DUDS, ROUND OF 32
OWNER ROUND SELECTION PLAYER TEAM SEED GAME2_SCORE
1 Dan 7 66 Jordan Murphy Minnesota Golden Gophers 10 1.5
2 Alison 1 7 Rui Hachimura Gonzaga Bulldogs 1 8.0
3 Luke 3 24 Ignas Brazdeikis Michigan Wolverines 2 8.0
4 Dan 6 55 Kenny Williams North Carolina Tar Heels 1 8.0

6 Dan 3 26 Kyle Guy Virginia Cavaliers 1 12.0
7 Stu 4 33 Matt Mooney Texas Tech Red Raiders 3 13.0

Yeah man, he had to sit out so much he only earned 1.5 points. So instead of reaping the benefit of picking a bonus player who has two games worth of stats, I get the not benefit of picking a dude who plays one game. I may as well have taken a chump from Prairie View A&M. Also not great: my guy from UNC and Guy from UVA. Alison also earns the distinction of having more than one dude on this shit list.

Fun fact: the highest-scoring non-bonus player going into the Sweet Sixteen is Jake's Carsen Edwards! This plot also reminds us that Stu's PJ Washington has yet to play a single second of this tournament.

Alright then, let's see the standings:

Jake still leads, but is down to 3 men: Michigan State's good guard, Purdue's Edwards, and VT's Blackshear Jr.

Gav has 2 UNC role players. One has totaled over 20 per game, and the other has averaged 16 per game. Wow! And his VT guy has more points than his Zag.

Alison has 7 still active, and her highest scorers have been Houston's Davis Jr, averaging  35 fantasy points a game, and King from Oregon, averaging right around 30.

Chris has UNC's top scorer, a Michigan St guy, and Tennessee's Bone Zone remaining. All three owners above him have players from those teams, and it's quite unlikely he'll be able to move anywhere but down in the standings.

Stu has 4 players left, and 3 are Red Raiders. If his Kentucky guy returns as a dominant force and Tech makes the final, sure, Stu's still alive.

Luke has 6 players left, including Oregon's top scorer. Those bonus points would be good. Maybe I'm just tired, but I don't see a way for Luke to come out on top, except maybe for an Oregon/Michigan final.

Dan also has lots of guys but not much hope. Needs Virginia to beat UNC, and Florida State to get to the final, and probably lots of other stuff.

Shawn also has a Florida State guy, so that and Tennessee could move him up in the standings. Yep, gettin' pretty tired over here. His Florida State player is so tall, though. Very tall, good job Shawn, we'll see you next year.

James: players left from LSU, Gonzaga, and Houston. Lots of upsets and an LSU / Houston final would be pretty improbable. His Houston guy is not performing very well - Alison's Cougar is getting all the points for that squad.

Bob is playing the long UVA game with me, and I think we can both agree that it pretty much stinks. A slow pace for those Cavaliers, you know.

March Madness Fantasy 2019 - Round of 64 and Play-In Games

None of the play-in teams are still alive, so let's memorialize them before we move on.

3 Jake 4 31 Shamorie Ponds St. John's Red Storm 11 50.0
4 Stu 5 48 Shizz Alston Jr. Temple Owls 11 41.5

Winder had a meh play-in game, but lit in up in their loss in the round of 64. Congrats to Gavin, who really needed this guy to play well since he only got Zion Williamson with the #1 overall pick.

Last Pick Jake got decent totals from his play-in guys, but both are out of the tourney already, which is less than ideal.

Play-in guys who were not drafted unowned with top total scores:

9 Raasean Davis North Carolina Central Eagles 16 57.5
10 Mike Holloway Jr. Fairleigh Dickinson Knights 16 56.5

Moving on to the round of 64 results, here's some undrafted players who did well:

6 Noah Dickerson Washington Huskies 9 50.5

Neat!

Okay, maybe it's time to talk about the players we actually drafted and what's up with our league standings.

Everyone but Shawn, Alison, and Dan had one of the top 7 scorers in the first round. Ja Morant was huge, posting a triple-double against Marquette. Chris and James got excellent production from their Seton Hall and Vermont picks, but both of those teams lost.

The lowlights include Dan's Gonzaga PG and Shawn's Duke PG only scoring 10  and 12 points though the teams won in blowouts, James losing Brown (and Sneed) in KSU's loss (and Brown sitting out 15 minutes of the first half with foul trouble), and Bob with low output from his 3rd round and final picks.

I am in Wichita as I type this, and I am pleased to report that the Carlos O'Kelley's commercial featuring former Wichita State Shocker and KU transfer Conner Frankamp and his teammates is in heavy rotation. It just played on this TV during halftime of the LSU/Maryland game. It sucks, just like Frankamp always sucked in the NCAA Tournament.

Here is a plot showing the drafted players' total scores, arranged by where their teams are seeded:

Colorful, right?

Let's get to the leaderboard!

With his bonus point players leading the way, Jake has a slight lead over Gavin. Iowa and Murray State wins today would be huge for Jake's slim chances.

Gav lost players from St. Mary's, Ole Miss, and Belmont, and has 5 remaining. Should UNC lose early, he'd be down to 3 players and that would not be ideal for him.

Chris, Stu, and Alison are tightly packed together with totals around 230 to 240.

Chris lost 2 players, including his 2nd round pick of the high-scoring Marquette guy.

Stu's first round pick of Kentucky's PJ Washington was disasterous. Washington didn't play due to a foot injury, and we don't know if he'll be back for any of the tournament. It the injury has probably given his team the boot -- the walking boot, that is! To be in 4th place despite this situation is... fine.

Alison got pretty even, solid production from her picks, and all of them are alive for the round of 32.

Luke is similarly solid but unremarkable at this point. The only player he lost was a Martin twin from Nevada.

Shawn and I enjoyed a nice Italian dinner last night, and that will be the highlight of the 2019 tournament for him, because his team is boned. The first four players he drafted are still alive, and the last four he drafted all lost: Iowa State, Utah State, Syracuse, and Yale all failed him.

Dan still has all his players, and if the chalk holds up he'll only lose one player in the round of 32, his undersized, lumbering forward from Minnesota who is somehow a double-double machine.

Bob got a huge game from Duke's Barrett, his top pick, and not much from his UVA and MSU guys. His bonus picks from Utah State and Ole Miss were also disappointing, and his big white guy from Wisconsin was eliminated.

James only has four dudes left. He lost the K-State teammates, and his final two picks from Vermont and Northeastern. He does have the best players from LSU, Houston, and the Zags, so if they go far he can get out of the cellar.

2019 March Madness - The Draft

I TRAVELED 500 MILES TO GIVE YOU MY SEED

58 of the 80 players drafted are from teams seeded 1-7. “Bonus” players that earn the 1.5x multiplier from seeds 8-14 make up the remaining 22 players drafted; no players were selected from teams seeded 15 or 16. Here is a table of players per team’s seed:

Seed    Players Drafted
1 14
2    15
3    8
4    8
5    2 (yikes!)
6    5
7    2
8    5
9    2
10    4
11    5
12    3
13    2
14    1

I drafted the most 1-seed players (5), while Alison drafted the most 2’s (4). Stu drafted the most 3-seed players, all of them members of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Jake is the only owner with no 1-seed players, and the average seeding of his players is 7.75. For comparison, most owners’ average seed number is between 5 and 6.

DOUBLE DUTY

Except for Stu’s trifecta of Red Raiders, no one has more than two players from the same team. 2 of my first 3 picks were from Virginia, and I also have 2 UNC guys. Gav picked up 2 UNC role players at the end of the draft. Bob also has 2 Virginia guys. James has 2 K-State players.

PICKING THE SCHOOLS TO PROVE TO DAD I’M NOT A FOOL

UNC had the most players drafted - 6 of them! Every other 1 and 2 seed had 4 players drafted, except for Tennessee, which had 3.

THE FIRST FOUR FOUR

Four players from the “First Four” play-in games were drafted. Jake has a Belmont and St John’s player, Gav has a Belmont, and Stu has Temple’s Shizz Alston Jr.

NAMES IN THE GAMES

Speaking of this man named Shizz, Stu’s team has a bunch of great names: Shizz, Bruno Fernando, Jaylen Nowell, Tariq Owens. Shawn’s got some cool-sounded dudes as well: Mfiondu Kabengele, Marial Shayok, Tyus Battle, Neemias Queta, Miye Oni. Alison has a Xavier and a Zavier, plus Rui Hachimura and the legendary Admiral Schofield. I think De’Andre Hunter has a fun name, because I think of it as “The Andre Hunter”, and picture him chasing Andre Agassi around with a hunting rifle.

CURSE OF THE ORANGE PEARL

Not a single player from the Auburn Tigers was drafted! That’s the only team seeded 1-4 that was shafted. Yet no one took a player from their first-round opponent NM State,

THINK ABOUT DIRECTION WONDER WHY YOU HAVEN’T BEFORE

Almost everyone has a player from each region, but Jake doesn’t have anyone in the Midwest, and Stu doesn’t have anyone in the South.

HARD HITTING POSITION ANALYSIS

More guards were picked than forwards. 48 guards, 29 forwards, and 3 centers.
