March Madness Fantasy 2019 - Round of 64 and Play-In Games

None of the play-in teams are still alive, so let's memorialize them before we move on.

OWNER ROUND SELECTION PLAYER TEAM SEED TOTAL_SCORE
1 Gavin 2 20 Dylan Windler Belmont Bruins 11 106.5
2 Jake 6 51 Nick Muszynski Belmont Bruins 11 68.5
3 Jake 4 31 Shamorie Ponds St. John's Red Storm 11 50.0
4 Stu 5 48 Shizz Alston Jr. Temple Owls 11 41.5

Winder had a meh play-in game, but lit in up in their loss in the round of 64. Congrats to Gavin, who really needed this guy to play well since he only got Zion Williamson with the #1 overall pick.

Last Pick Jake got decent totals from his play-in guys, but both are out of the tourney already, which is less than ideal.

Play-in guys who were not drafted unowned with top total scores:

PLAYER TEAM SEED TOTAL_SCORE
1 Zylan Cheatham Arizona State Sun Devils 11 91.0
2 Kevin McClain Belmont Bruins 11 89.0
3 Darnell Edge Fairleigh Dickinson Knights 16 77.0
4 Luguentz Dort Arizona State Sun Devils 11 64.0
6 Tyson Ward North Dakota State Bison 16 60.0
7 Jahlil Jenkins Fairleigh Dickinson Knights 16 59.0
8 Vinnie Shahid North Dakota State Bison 16 58.0
9 Raasean Davis North Carolina Central Eagles 16 57.5
10 Mike Holloway Jr. Fairleigh Dickinson Knights 16 56.5

Moving on to the round of 64 results, here's some undrafted players who did well:

5 Caleb Homesley Liberty Flames 12 52.0
6 Noah Dickerson Washington Huskies 9 50.5

Neat!

Okay, maybe it's time to talk about the players we actually drafted and what's up with our league standings.

1 Gavin 2 20 Dylan Windler Belmont Bruins 11 72.5
2 Jake 2 11 Ja Morant Murray State Racers 12 59.0

TOP SEVEN DUDS, ROUND OF 64
OWNER ROUND SELECTION PLAYER TEAM SEED GAME1_SCORE
1 Bob 8 78 Braxton Key Virginia Cavaliers 1 9
2 Dan 4 35 Josh Perkins Gonzaga Bulldogs 1 10
3 James 4 39 Barry Brown Jr. Kansas State Wildcats 4 10
4 James 2 19 Armoni Brooks Houston Cougars 3 11
5 Bob 3 23 Nick Ward Michigan State Spartans 2 11
6 Shawn 2 12 Tre Jones Duke Blue Devils 1 12
7 Luke 5 44 Ryan Cline Purdue Boilermakers 3 15

Everyone but Shawn, Alison, and Dan had one of the top 7 scorers in the first round. Ja Morant was huge, posting a triple-double against Marquette. Chris and James got excellent production from their Seton Hall and Vermont picks, but both of those teams lost.

The lowlights include Dan's Gonzaga PG and Shawn's Duke PG only scoring 10  and 12 points though the teams won in blowouts, James losing Brown (and Sneed) in KSU's loss (and Brown sitting out 15 minutes of the first half with foul trouble), and Bob with low output from his 3rd round and final picks.

I am in Wichita as I type this, and I am pleased to report that the Carlos O'Kelley's commercial featuring former Wichita State Shocker and KU transfer Conner Frankamp and his teammates is in heavy rotation. It just played on this TV during halftime of the LSU/Maryland game. It sucks, just like Frankamp always sucked in the NCAA Tournament.

Here is a plot showing the drafted players' total scores, arranged by where their teams are seeded:

Colorful, right?

Let's get to the leaderboard!

With his bonus point players leading the way, Jake has a slight lead over Gavin. Iowa and Murray State wins today would be huge for Jake's slim chances.

Gav lost players from St. Mary's, Ole Miss, and Belmont, and has 5 remaining. Should UNC lose early, he'd be down to 3 players and that would not be ideal for him.

Chris, Stu, and Alison are tightly packed together with totals around 230 to 240.

Chris lost 2 players, including his 2nd round pick of the high-scoring Marquette guy.

Stu's first round pick of Kentucky's PJ Washington was disasterous. Washington didn't play due to a foot injury, and we don't know if he'll be back for any of the tournament. It the injury has probably given his team the boot -- the walking boot, that is! To be in 4th place despite this situation is... fine.

Alison got pretty even, solid production from her picks, and all of them are alive for the round of 32.

Luke is similarly solid but unremarkable at this point. The only player he lost was a Martin twin from Nevada.

Shawn and I enjoyed a nice Italian dinner last night, and that will be the highlight of the 2019 tournament for him, because his team is boned. The first four players he drafted are still alive, and the last four he drafted all lost: Iowa State, Utah State, Syracuse, and Yale all failed him.

Dan still has all his players, and if the chalk holds up he'll only lose one player in the round of 32, his undersized, lumbering forward from Minnesota who is somehow a double-double machine.

Bob got a huge game from Duke's Barrett, his top pick, and not much from his UVA and MSU guys. His bonus picks from Utah State and Ole Miss were also disappointing, and his big white guy from Wisconsin was eliminated.

James only has four dudes left. He lost the K-State teammates, and his final two picks from Vermont and Northeastern. He does have the best players from LSU, Houston, and the Zags, so if they go far he can get out of the cellar.
