Tracking Poll

I've always thought an album's best track was most likely to be #3. Corinne has noticed it's usually #7.

What do you think?

So I took a random sample of my CDs excluding mixed CDs and greatest hits.

Based upon my biases on what I deem as the best song, I come up with both Track 1 and Track 5 (it was tie) as the having the best song.

I seriously did this and took time away from studying to do so...

It's like a mathematical formula...Track 3 is the best. The opening song is the track that 'introduces' the new album, new sound, new band...whatever. This is followed by Track 2 that is generally an upbeat song...a real rocker. Track 3 is the single, the hit. While not all singles are the best songs on an album....for a lot of bands the single is their only good song and therefore the best one. Some examples from my iTunes at work.

U2: Achtung Baby - One
Oasis: What's The Story (Morning Glory) - Wonderwall
Third Eye Blind: - Semi Charmed Life
Travis: The Invisble Band - Side

I could list more but I guess I do have work to do.

I've also noticed that the single has been the first song on the CD. Such as: No Doubt - Spiderwebs, Blues Traveller - Run Around, 311 - Down. (I don't know why these 3 bands/songs popped into my head, but it doesn't matter)

It seems, though, that the most common track to place the single is Track #3.

As for the best Track.... that is totally up to the listener.
